DASUS – the Dominica Association of Seventh-day Adventists in the U. S. – is an organization dedicated to providing a forum for Dominicans of the Seventh- day Adventist faith to come together for events and projects that benefit causes at home. Organized on August 21, 2004, the name DASUS was proposed by Fern B. Allick-Mann and adopted on September 11, 2004. The DASUS founding committee, under the chairmanship of William Bellot, held its first Dominica Day at the Bronx Temple, Bronx, New York on Saturday, November 6, 2004.
Pastor Henry Luke was the guest speaker at the first Dominica Day. The second Dominica Day was held at the Bethany Seventh-day Adventist Church in Westbury, New York on Saturday, November 5, 2005 with Pastor Glenworth Joseph delivering the message. Both AY sessions featured an inspirational, cultural play written by Beryl R. Williams.
In February 2005, the DASUS Founding Committee met to formalize the organization. A new board was voted in, with Beryl R. Williams as the first president. In May 2005, partly through the efforts of Brian Scotland and Corinthia James, DASUS gained 501 (c) (3), nonprofit status. DASUS also created a membership circle to foster networking and fellowship for Dominican Seventh-day Adventists in the United States of America. As part of its mission to engage in cause-related fundraising projects to benefit select Seventh-day Adventist churches or institutions in Dominica, DASUS launched a campaign to assist the Dominica SDA School System.
In the summer of 2005 Lester E. Joseph created the first DASUS logo, arranged for DASUS to have a presence on the Internet, and donated telephone and facsimile service. In September 2006, he launched this website, www.DASUS.org. JoAnne Williams-Carryl generously contributed a post office box to provide an official mailing address for DASUS.
DASUS’ main function will be to plan and host an annual Dominica Day in celebration of our faith and heritage. The event will coincide with Independence Day Celebrations. Future plans include the formation of chapters around the country and in North America. Fundamental to DASUS’ mission is keeping members focused on being welcomed into our eternal home, and inviting other Dominicans to get ready for Jesus’ soon return.
