Third Annual Dominica Day - November 11, 2006

 

The Dominica Association of Seventh-day Adventists in the U.S. (DASUS) hosted its Third Annual Dominica Day under the theme 'Not Far From Home' on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the New Rochelle Seventh-day Adventist Church, 456 Webster Avenue, in New Rochelle, New York.  This celebration coincided with the 28th Anniversary of Dominica’s Independence.

Dominica Day 2006 commenced with a very special Sabbath School program at 9:00 a.m. under the joint direction of Keturah Frederick (Bourne) and Jane James (Castle Bruce).

Dominican-born pastor, scholar and law professor Vaughn E. James, JD, DD, PhD, was the featured speaker. Dr. James was Religious Liberty Director of the New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists from 1998 to 2001. During his teens he gained fame in the Caribbean as the award-winning calypsonian, King Shakey.  He is currently a religion and law professor at Texas Tech University School of Law.

Neville Peter

 

Another highlight of the celebration was a concert by gospel-recording artist Neville Peter.  In addition to other awards, he was named Best Male Contemporary Vocalist and Best Artist by the Caribbean Gospel Music Association. Mr. Peter performs internationally and has appeared on numerous popular television and radio programs in the United States. Neville's father is from Dominica.

Two Dominicans honored  for outstanding contributions to Adventism in Dominica

 

As part of its Dominica Day celebration, DASUS two distinguished individuals were honored for their pioneering role in the growth of the Seventh-day Adventist movement in Dominica.   This year’s honorees were Acme Trocard formerly of the Roseau Seventh-day Adventist Church. and brother Arthur Waldron (posthumous), a founder and stalwart of the Portsmouth Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The first DASUS Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented last year.  Madison Watty (Roseau) was honored for her pioneering role in the Roseau Seventh-day Adventist School and her continued involvement in community outreach at the Solid Rock Seventh-day Adventist Church in Far Rockaway, New York.   Pastor J. C. Shillingford, whose graduation in 1950 from Caribbean Training College in Maracas, Trinidad, (formerly Caribbean Union College, now University of the Southern Caribbean), distinguished him as the first Adventist pastor from Dominica, was recognized for paving the way for many young men from is native island to enter the ministry.

DSDASS benefits from proceeds to Dominica Day 2005

The Dominica Seventh-day Adventist Secondary School in Glanvillia, Portsmouth, was the recipient of proceeds from Dominica Day 2005.  An assortment of educational software covering various subject areas were donated to the school's computer lab to add to its electronic reference library.  A digital camera was also donated.
